TRA Codes Explained: E-3, L-3, L-5 and G-2 for OTR Tires
TRA codes explained for buyers: what E-3, E-4, L-3, L-5, G-2 and C-1 mean on OTR tires and how to match the tread to your machine.
Here are the TRA codes explained in plain words. The code on the sidewall tells you what kind of work the tread was designed for. Matching it to your machine matters as much as the size.

The Letters
- E – earthmover: haul trucks, scrapers, articulated dumpers
- L – loader and dozer
- G – grader
- C – compactor
- IND – industrial and port equipment
The Numbers
The number shows tread type and depth. 1 is a rib tread, 2 is traction, 3 is rock, 4 is deep rock, and 5 is extra deep rock. A letter S means smooth, used underground or on very sharp rock.
Common Codes and Where They Work
E-3 and E-4
Rock treads for dump trucks. E-4 has a deeper tread for longer life on abrasive roads.
L-3 and L-5
L-3 is the everyday loader tread for quarries and aggregates. L-5 has very deep rubber for scrap yards, steel mills and blasted rock.
G-2
The standard traction tread for motor graders, with good grip on loose material.
L-2
A lighter traction tread for loaders working on soft soil or sand.
TRA Codes Explained for Ordering
When you request a price, give the code together with the size and rating. The Tire and Rim Association maintains these codes. You can browse our tires by code, for example L-3 tires, E-3 tires and G-2 tires.
If the old tire is worn smooth and you cannot read the code, send a photo of the machine and the work it does. We will suggest the right tread.
